About The Founder

I’m Jennifer, born and raised in the deep south of New Zealand, where life revolved around the outdoors from the very beginning. I was incredibly lucky to grow up with parents who encouraged me to be involved in every sport and opportunity possible, often sacrificing their own time so I could experience as much as I could.

The Places That Feel Like Home

Our holidays were never about sitting still. They were spent exploring what they always called "our backyard", travelling throughout the South Island, spending summers in Golden Bay, the Marlborough Sounds, and Central Otago. Those places became part of who I am. The lakes, beaches, mountains, rivers, and coastline hold some of my most treasured memories and continue to inspire this brand today.

A Life of Movement

For over 20 years, I worked as a High School Outdoor Education teacher, sharing my passion for movement, adventure, and the outdoors with young people. Alongside teaching, I've also spent more than two decades involved in sports coaching. Whether it's water sports, skiing, tramping, fitness, hockey, or simply being outside, movement has always been a huge part of my life.

Why I Created The Theory

But as the years passed, I found myself struggling to find clothing that truly suited women like me. I wanted pieces that were comfortable, soft, flattering, and practical; clothing that moved with us instead of squeezing us in all the wrong places. Our bodies are constantly evolving through every stage of life, and I wanted activewear and lifestyle pieces that embraced that change rather than fighting against it.

I also wanted to create clothing that felt stylish and modern without being overly tight, revealing, or intimidating to wear. Something that worked for everyday women, whether that's busy mums, women rediscovering movement, travelling, relaxing, working, or simply wanting to feel comfortable and confident in their own skin.

The Heart of The Theory

As my stepdaughter reached the fashion-conscious teenage years, I realised the same gap existed for younger girls too, especially those wanting clothes that felt relaxed, wearable, and effortless rather than overly fitted or showy.

From the beginning, affordability was incredibly important to me. I wanted to create a brand where women could buy beautiful, quality pieces without feeling priced out. Clothing designed for real life, real movement, and real bodies.

Every collection at The Theory tells part of my story. Each collection is inspired by a special place in New Zealand that has shaped my life, places that hold treasured memories, adventures, and moments that continue to influence who I am today. From coastlines and lakes to mountains and valleys, these landscapes are woven into the heart of the brand.

The names of our garments are equally personal. Every piece is named after either someone who has played an important role in my life or a place that has left a lasting impression on me. They're a quiet way of honouring the people, friendships, family, and places that have helped shape my journey, and I hope each piece carries a little of that meaning with it.

This brand is built around the idea that we are forever evolving, just like our bodies, our lifestyles, and the seasons around us. I wanted to create clothing that evolves with us, supporting women through every stage of life with comfort, confidence, and timeless style.

A very special thank you also belongs to Emma, who helped bring this idea to life in the very beginning. We worked together at our high school and sat beside each other for almost ten years. Without her encouragement, support, ideas, and belief in the vision, this brand may never have left the ground. Her inspiration and friendship have been part of this journey from the start, and I'll always be grateful for that.

Our Promise

At its heart, The Theory is about creating clothing that feels good to wear, moves beautifully with you, and allows women to feel comfortable, confident, and themselves, wherever life takes them.

Thank you for being part of our story
